DC Unveils 178-Acre Redevelopment Plan

WASHINGTON, DC-DC wants to create five neighborhoods that will encompass some two million sf of development and 750,000 sf of redevelopment of historic buildings in a 173-acre District-controlled campus along Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue. Mayor Adrian Fenty has just unveiled the draft St. Elizabeths East Redevelopment Framework Plan. His Administration will host a public hearing on the proposed plan on Oct. 28. The plan will be submitted to the DC Council for approval in early November.

St. Elizabeths was originally two campuses straddling Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, serving as a mental health hospital and community for several years. The East Campus was transferred to the District 1987, when mental healthcare was federally deregulated; the 183-acre West Campus remained under federal control. General Services Administration wants the West Campus serve as the new headquarters of the Department of Homeland Security. Federal redevelopment plans call for the adaptive reuse of the existing historic buildings and grounds and the construction of new buildings and parking on this part of the parcel.
