Plans for SW waterfront to include canal, hotels

Washington Business Journal - October 1, 2007 by Jonathan O'Connell Staff Reporter

A new $1 billion Washington harbor along D.C.'s Southwest waterfront, complete with hotels, restaurants, housing, retail space -- and even a new canal with a public marina -- is edging closer to reality after leaseholders reached agreement with builder PN Hoffman to develop the area.

The JBG Cos., which controls three key parcels along Water Street SW on behalf of leaseholders Phillips Flagship Seafood, the Channel Inn hotel and the owners of the nightclub Zanzibar, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in June to relinquish the land for development by PN Hoffman. A year ago the city selected Hoffman, along with Baltimore's Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse, over Chevy Chase-based JBG to create a massive mixed-used development there along the lines of Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
